Virgil van Dijk has broken the deadlock at the Stadium of Light, giving Liverpool the lead against Sunderland.
The Reds were largely frustrated in the first half, with the Black Cats’ formidable Premier League home record once again proving hard to overcome.
But in the second half, the big Dutchman was on hand to direct Mohamed Salah’s corner into the back of the net, courtesy of a deflection off a Sunderland man along the way.
It could prove to be a crucial goal for Liverpool, who are bidding to remain in the hunt for the Champions League places.
