Teams confirmed as hosts look to close gap in title race

See how the two teams line up at the Etihad.

Manchester City could close the gap on Premier League leaders Arsenal to two points with a victory over Newcastle United at the Etihad on Saturday.

The Gunners were held by bottom club Wolves in midweek, opening the door for Pep Guardiola’s side to make ground on their title rivals.

City are unbeaten in seven matches in all competitions and will be hoping to repeat their 5-1 aggregate win over the Magpies in the EFL Cup semi-final.

Eddie Howe’s side were impressive on the road in the Champions League on Wednesday, thrashing Qarabag on the longest trip ever taken by an English side in Europe’s elite competition.

However, Newcastle’s away record in the Premier League this season has been far from desirable, and they have never won a league game at the Etihad.

Manchester City team news

Only Rayan Ait-Nouri and Omar Marmoush remain from the City team that started the 2-0 FA Cup win over Salford City a week ago.

Erling Haaland returns to lead the attack, while the instrumental Rodri and Gianluigi Donnarumma are also recalled for the clash at the Etihad.

Max Alleyne, Nathan Ake miss out, while Mateo Kovacic, Jeremy Doku and Josko Gvardiol remain sidelined through injury.

Manchester City XI: Donnarumma, Nunes, Dias, Guéhi, Ait-Nouri, Rodri, Bernardo (C), O’Reilly, Semenyo, Marmoush, Haaland

Newcastle team news

Howe opts for one change to the team that thrashed Qarabag 6-1 in midweek, with Jacob Ramsey coming into the starting 11.

Nick Woltemade and Anthony Gordon provide the visitors’ goal threat as the Magpies target a first Premier League away win against Man City in nearly 26 years.

Newcastle XI: Pope, Tripper, Hall, Burn, Thiaw, Tonali, Willock, Ramsey, Elanga, Gordon, Woltemade
